Leading Businesses in Region Recognized by The Manufacturers' Association as Top Manufacturer of the Year, Community Investor, Innovator and Partner

York, PA - The Manufacturers' Association, a growing regional trade association serving manufacturing, production and logistics in Pennsylvania and Maryland, recently honored the recipients of its 2017 annual Manufacturing Awards.

Presented as part of their awards segment at their April 26 'Annual Event' at The Pullo Center in York, the occasion set the backdrop for the Association to publicly honor and recognize its member companies and partners who have made a difference in the regional economy, the lives of their employees, their community, and the local manufacturing sector.

Honored as Manufacturer of the Year was Matthews International. Located in York County, Mathews International employs nearly 350 people in southcentral PA, and has an 85-year heritage of manufacturing in York, where many know of the company's brand as York Casket. Through recent acquisitions the company has been able to expand its market and add employment – 70 employees in the past year. Matthews has also made multi-million dollar investments in manufacturing equipment and other facility upgrades at the York location - purchasing new equipment, investing in robotic equipment and other automation, as well as productivity and environmental improvements.

Recognized as the Association's outstanding Community Investor was First Capital Federal Credit Union. Presented each year to the company that shows a concerted commitment to the betterment and growth of the local or regional community(s) in which it does business, this award honored First Capital Federal Credit Union – a not-for-profit, full-service financial institution owned by its members, operated in York County for more than 60 years. A few of the many community activities which First Capital is committed to include: Adopt a Family, Clothes donations to the Salvation Army, Financial Donations to the York Cancer Center and the American Heart Association, and educational and mentoring opportunities to local students through the Career Exploration Program and Student Tours. They also host the York County Alliance for Learning in their offices.

Honored as Manufacturing Innovator was Harley-Davidson Motor Company (York Vehicle Operations), for its innovative use of the industrial Internet of Things (IoT) technology, to maintain critical equipment. Harley-Davidson has become an automotive industry leader by adopting this cutting-edge Smart Sensor technology, which allows remote and wireless collection of real time machinery data that increases equipment uptime by predicting equipment failures, plans maintenance activities in advance, and also prevents machine failures from occurring in the future.

The Lancaster Workforce Development Board was recognized as the Association's Partner of the Year. The lead organization in Lancaster County for workforce planning and development, it administers federal and state funds to support job seekers, dislocated workers, employers and young people. The Board recently reorganized and created a new industry sector strategy focusing on manufacturing to produce better training and hiring outcomes for the industry.

As a result, the Board developed an Industry Training Partnership for Advanced Manufacturing, which succeeded in securing funds to support technical training for the manufacturing workforce. They have also secured training funds through the federal Make it in America program – to help re-shore production to Pennsylvania.

The four individual manufacturing and partnership awards were also presented by Doug Hall, nationally noted systems innovation practitioner and best-selling author, who served as the Association's keynote speaker for the April 26 gathering.

First Capital's NextGen committee picked the 3 pictures with the most likes and judged them based on the student's community involvement.

It was a very tough decision, but we selected Jordyn Gentzler as our winner. She received a limo ride to the prom for her and her friends, a $50 gift certificate to a nail salon, a $50 gift certificate for flowers, and 2 prom tickets, courtesy of First Capital.

On Friday, Lisa Barshinger, Business Development Representative, and Tara Houser, Vice President of Marketing, had the honor of meeting up with Jordyn and her friends as the limo arrived at her doorstep.

"We wanted it to be a night she would never forget, said Tara Houser, VP of Marketing. "First Capital was happy to work with the West York Area High School to sponsor the Ultimate Prom Package as well as the favors and photo booth at the prom."

After seeing Jordyn off, Lisa and Tara headed to prom to set up the First Capital table display. First Capital sponsored the TapSnap photo booth and gave students picture frames as their prom favor.

First Capital Congratulates Two Young Savers!

York, PA – On May 21, 2015, First Capital rewarded two young members for their participation during April's National Credit Union Youth Month™. This year's theme was "Wild About Saving™" and using that theme, credit unions across the country came up with creative ways to get children involved in the credit union and in saving money.

For our Deep Sea Savers (ages 2-13), we offered animal lollipops for every $25 deposit. Each lollipop was worth a different dollar amount and depending on which animal the child chose, he/she was awarded extra money, courtesy of First Capital, to deposit in his/her account.

Rock Star Super Savers (ages 14-25) were entered into a drawing for a pair of Hersheypark tickets when they deposited $50 or more, once per week. At the end of the month, Kylie G. was randomly chosen as our winner.

During the month, First Capital also took part in the Credit Union National Association's youth savings challenge. Credit unions all across the country entered the contest but only 25 were chosen to receive $100 to give to one young saver. First Capital FCU was chosen as one of the 25 CUs and we in turn chose Nikki H. to receive our $100.

Youth Financial Advisory Board Shares Input on Financial Services for Young Adults!

York, PA – On Tuesday, April 21, 2015, First Capital Federal Credit Union's Youth Financial Advisory Board (YFAB) held its last meeting for the 2014-2015 school year. During the four sessions held over the course of the last several months, York County high school students worked with members of the First Capital FCU NextGen committee, an internal committee that works to provide financial products and activities for children and young adults, to explore the various products and services that appeal to them.

"This feedback is essential in order to help First Capital continue to offer stellar programs for children and young adults," said Lisa Barshinger, YFAB Coordinator. "Our youth is our future and we must offer them products and services that will meet their needs."

Fourteen juniors and seniors participated in all 4 sessions. During the sessions, they offered us insight on what they look for when it comes to scholarship applications. Because of this feedback, First Capital changed its scholarship format from written essay to video essay. Students also provided us information on things they want or expect from their financial institution. But, this was also a learning process for them! Many students did not know the difference between credit unions and banks. First Capital discussed these things as well as what students need to know to have a successful financial future.

Each session was fun and informative! We provided them dinner and after the discussion they took part in a fun activity - tubing at Avalanche Express, bowling and laser tag at Laser Alleys, and watching a York Revolution baseball game.

During the last session, parents and teachers were invited to join the students for a wrap up session and the announcement of our two scholarship winners. The students were asked to submit video commercials to enter the scholarship contest. We awarded two $500 scholarships to: Lindsey Ellis, a Dallastown High School senior and Katie Mummert, a Christian School of York junior.

We are currently accepting applications from York County High School juniors and seniors for the 2015 – 2016 YFAB sessions. Please contact Lisa Barshinger at 717.747.6393 or by email at lisab@firstcapitalfcu.com for more information.

First Capital FCU Protects Your Credit!

York, PA – On April 1, 8 and 10, 2014, First Capital Federal Credit Union held 'Protect Your Credit' events, one at each branch, to pull members' credit reports to check for fraud. "Oftentimes people get caught up in the business of life and don't take the time to check their credit report," said Tara Houser, VP of Marketing. "But, First Capital is taking steps to change that."

Dozens of people came out for the events to take advantage of the opportunity to sit down with a Member Service Officer who reviewed their credit report with them, explained what was on it and made sure everything was reporting correctly. Snacks were provided and those who attended the event were entered to win a $100 Visa Gift Card.

This is the first time First Capital has scheduled an evening event for credit checks, but we do offer this service every day free of charge. In all, the event raised awareness and helped some save money.

First Capital FCU Thwarts Identity Thief!

York, PA – On Friday, January 10, 2014, a man came into First Capital Federal Credit Union asking to become a member and apply for a loan. He claimed to live in Ohio, but work locally. During the interview process, he could not tell us the name of the friend who referred him to us. He also could not answer why he had certain items on his credit report. Lastly, the pay stub he produced had inconsistencies. All of this raised red flags for the Member Service Officer who was working with the man. After he left, First Capital FCU contacted Springettsbury Township police and told them about the situation. We then set up a sting operation with the police over a two-day period. The man came into the Credit Union on Tuesday to sign his paperwork…and police were waiting. Once signed, the police placed him into custody.

At this time, Springettsbury Township police have charged the man with criminal identity theft, forgery, among other charges. He is in the York County prison on $250,000 bail.

"Coming on the heels of the Target breach, it's great to know how a local financial institution and the police are taking steps to stop these identity thieves," said Tara Houser, VP of Marketing. "I'm so proud of our team for not just denying the man membership and allowing him to walk away and potentially hit another financial institution, but to actually stop him from targeting another institution and victim."

"At times, the volunteers had to question whether the decision that was made was the best one and help guide the student down a different path."

Each volunteer worked with 6-7 students from Central York and Susquehannock High Schools. The students arrived at 9:00 a.m. and the day wrapped up around 1:00 p.m.

CU Superheroes Invade First Capital FCU!

York, PA- To celebrate National Youth Week and this year's theme of 'Be a Credit Union Super Saver', First Capital FCU is asking its staff and young super savers to dress up as their favorite superheroes for a chance at a special prize and their photo posted on Facebook. Some First Capital staff members kicked off the week in their favorite costumes. Super Teller Jess took home the prize for best dressed and received two movie tickets for her creative costume. Additionally this month, children (ages 2-12) who deposit $25.00 or more in one transaction are invited to earn some extra cash. With one hand they can reach into our coin cache and pull out a handful of coins which will also be deposited into their accounts. Not to be left out, there's something for teens the month of April too. For every deposit of $25, teens will be entered into a drawing to win a super movie prize package which includes two movie tickets, a 'superhero' DVD and candy.
