First Capital Federal Credit Union Is Helping Employee Find Kidney Donor!

York, PA – First Capital Federal Credit Union is asking for the public’s help to find a living kidney donor for an employee.

Lorie Hagar’s story began eight years ago when she was diagnosed with chronic kidney disease. Her diagnosis could have gone a few different ways: treat the disease and it goes away; live with kidney disease the rest of her life; or the disease progresses, and she needs a kidney transplant. Unfortunately, in February 2022 her doctor told her it had progressed to Stage 5, and it was time to start the transplant process. In the last few months, she has been placed on the deceased donor transplant list, which is the first step in finding a donor. However, the wait time for a deceased donor kidney can be 5 or 6 years. That’s why she is looking for a LIVING donor kidney. By finding a living donor the wait time for a transplant could be months, not years, and the kidney could last twice as long.

That’s when the Share Your Spare marketing campaign was born. First Capital has placed posters up in its branches and yard signs around the perimeters. Lamar Advertising has graciously gifted a billboard for the next 4 weeks to help spread awareness. The billboard is located on PA Route 74 in front of Spark Orthodontics.

With April being National Donate Life month, now is the perfect time to share Lorie’s story. First Capital staff will be dressing in blue and green, and wearing Donate Life bracelets on Friday, April 14th for National Donate Life Blue & Green Day. This day is intended to increase awareness around the importance of organ donor registration.

Won’t you join us in our quest to help find Lorie a kidney donor?! Please check out Lorie’s Facebook and Instagram pages here: linktr.ee/ineedakidney.

York, PA - The Manufacturers' Association, a growing regional trade association serving manufacturing, production and logistics in Pennsylvania and Maryland, recently honored the recipients of its 2017 annual Manufacturing Awards.

Presented as part of their awards segment at their April 26 'Annual Event' at The Pullo Center in York, the occasion set the backdrop for the Association to publicly honor and recognize its member companies and partners who have made a difference in the regional economy, the lives of their employees, their community, and the local manufacturing sector.

Honored as Manufacturer of the Year was Matthews International. Located in York County, Mathews International employs nearly 350 people in southcentral PA, and has an 85-year heritage of manufacturing in York, where many know of the company's brand as York Casket. Through recent acquisitions the company has been able to expand its market and add employment – 70 employees in the past year. Matthews has also made multi-million dollar investments in manufacturing equipment and other facility upgrades at the York location - purchasing new equipment, investing in robotic equipment and other automation, as well as productivity and environmental improvements.

Recognized as the Association's outstanding Community Investor was First Capital Federal Credit Union. Presented each year to the company that shows a concerted commitment to the betterment and growth of the local or regional community(s) in which it does business, this award honored First Capital Federal Credit Union – a not-for-profit, full-service financial institution owned by its members, operated in York County for more than 60 years. Harley-Davidson has become an automotive industry leader by adopting this cutting-edge Smart Sensor technology, which allows remote and wireless collection of real time machinery data that increases equipment uptime by predicting equipment failures, plans maintenance activities in advance, and also prevents machine failures from occurring in the future.

The Lancaster Workforce Development Board was recognized as the Association's Partner of the Year. The lead organization in Lancaster County for workforce planning and development, it administers federal and state funds to support job seekers, dislocated workers, employers and young people. The Board recently reorganized and created a new industry sector strategy focusing on manufacturing to produce better training and hiring outcomes for the industry.

As a result, the Board developed an Industry Training Partnership for Advanced Manufacturing, which succeeded in securing funds to support technical training for the manufacturing workforce. They have also secured training funds through the federal Make it in America program – to help re-shore production to Pennsylvania.

Youth Financial Advisory Board Shares Input on Financial Services for Young Adults!

York, PA – On Tuesday, April 21, 2015, First Capital Federal Credit Union's Youth Financial Advisory Board (YFAB) held its last meeting for the 2014-2015 school year. During the four sessions held over the course of the last several months, York County high school students worked with members of the First Capital FCU NextGen committee, an internal committee that works to provide financial products and activities for children and young adults, to explore the various products and services that appeal to them.

"This feedback is essential in order to help First Capital continue to offer stellar programs for children and young adults," said Lisa Barshinger, YFAB Coordinator. "Our youth is our future and we must offer them products and services that will meet their needs."

Fourteen juniors and seniors participated in all 4 sessions. During the sessions, they offered us insight on what they look for when it comes to scholarship applications. Because of this feedback, First Capital changed its scholarship format from written essay to video essay. Students also provided us information on things they want or expect from their financial institution. But, this was also a learning process for them! Many students did not know the difference between credit unions and banks. First Capital discussed these things as well as what students need to know to have a successful financial future.

Each session was fun and informative! We provided them dinner and after the discussion they took part in a fun activity - tubing at Avalanche Express, bowling and laser tag at Laser Alleys, and watching a York Revolution baseball game.

During the last session, parents and teachers were invited to join the students for a wrap up session and the announcement of our two scholarship winners. The students were asked to submit video commercials to enter the scholarship contest. We awarded two $500 scholarships to: Lindsey Ellis, a Dallastown High School senior and Katie Mummert, a Christian School of York junior.

We are currently accepting applications from York County High School juniors and seniors for the 2015 – 2016 YFAB sessions. Please contact Lisa Barshinger at 717.747.6393 or by email at [email protected] for more information.

First Capital FCU Thwarts Identity Thief!

York, PA – On Friday, January 10, 2014, a man came into First Capital Federal Credit Union asking to become a member and apply for a loan. He claimed to live in Ohio, but work locally. During the interview process, he could not tell us the name of the friend who referred him to us. He also could not answer why he had certain items on his credit report. Lastly, the pay stub he produced had inconsistencies. All of this raised red flags for the Member Service Officer who was working with the man. After he left, First Capital FCU contacted Springettsbury Township police and told them about the situation. We then set up a sting operation with the police over a two-day period. The man came into the Credit Union on Tuesday to sign his paperwork…and police were waiting. Once signed, the police placed him into custody.

At this time, Springettsbury Township police have charged the man with criminal identity theft, forgery, among other charges. He is in the York County prison on $250,000 bail.

"Coming on the heels of the Target breach, it's great to know how a local financial institution and the police are taking steps to stop these identity thieves," said Tara Houser, VP of Marketing. "I'm so proud of our team for not just denying the man membership and allowing him to walk away and potentially hit another financial institution, but to actually stop him from targeting another institution and victim."
